Heavy-duty triaxial accelerometers

6 March 2013 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

Measurement Specialties released two new triaxial accelerometers for heavy-duty applications – the Model 4332 and the Model 8102.

The 4332 is a COTS sensor featuring damped MEMS sensing technology and an amplified output, and is packaged in a rugged aluminium housing with integral cable assembly. It is offered in ranges from ±2 G to ±5 G with a low-pass filter set at 50 Hz.

It was specifically designed for motion analysis in low-frequency commercial and military applications such as building monitoring, road bed vibration, bridge safety, rail car comfort, off-road testing, underground throughways, tunnels and passageways.

This temperature compensated device has an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C and complies with IP68 requirements for submersion in water to a 10 metre depth. Designed to be screw-mounted, it can also be adhesively mounted for tests of short duration. It operates from 5–30 V d.c. excitation and offers a 0,5–4,5 V full scale output. The output is DC-coupled and is used in single-ended mode.

The other device – the 8102 – is a CE- and RoHS-compliant piezoelectric sensor featuring an amplified output. It is packaged in a rugged aluminium or stainless steel housing with an integral 152 cm cable assembly. It is offered in ranges from ±50 G through ±6000 G, boasts low current consumption and features an operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C.

The low-profile device was specifically designed for high-G impact measurements. Typical uses include, but are not limited to, mining, pile driving, structure demolition, IED explosive effects, vehicle impact, weapons and ammunition testing.

Designed for screw mounting, the 8102 provides a flat frequency response to 6000 Hz with linearity of ±1% FSO. It operates from 3,0–5,5 V d.c. excitation and offers a full scale output swing equal to half of the excitation voltage.
