In celebration of the new millennium, the world's largest video screen was activated at 4 Times Square, flooding the 'Crossroads of the World' with stunning, nine-storey-tall, super-bright images.
Created by Saco Smartvision, the large-format video screen uses light emitting diode (LED) technology and measures 27,4 by 36,5 m. It follows the curved form of the new Conde Nast Building at the southeast corner of Seventh Avenue and 43rd Street. The screen surpasses SACO's previous size record of 15,2 by 30,5 m for the Irish rock group, U2.
The Times Square screen produces a palette of more than 16,7 million colours and is claimed to enhance text, graphics and video, creating images that are crisp, clean and clear. Because they are built up from millions of discrete, individually energised red, green, and blue LEDs, SACO says its screens offer far better resolution and a greater viewing angle than any type of projected or coupled multi-monitor display.
