Bluetooth modules claimed to be smallest

Murata has developed what it claims is the world's smallest Bluetooth module. The company's Blue Module series uses low temperature, co-fired ceramic technology to achieve a high degree of integration.

Complying with the Bluetooth Specification Version 1.1 the Blue Module combines both active devices (ICs) and passive components with a single multilayer ceramic substrate. It supports both USB and UART interfaces.

Murata's Blue Module is a full HCI (Host Control Interface) module containing everything except the antenna. Components embedded in the module include RF/BB IC, LNA, antenna switch, flash memory and crystal oscillator. Several parts and functions are integrated within the substrate such as a bandpass filter, balun and other passives to achieve the small Bluetooth module. The substrate thus serves as the IC carrier and also as a functional device.

Murata says that it has simplified design and layout for the customer. Design engineers no longer have to source and mount several components to achieve the desired solution, and can thus focus on their core competencies. Not only is it smaller, but also the all-in-one module has the added advantages of reducing both inspection and design time.

The Class 2 modules currently qualified to Bluetooth Version 1.1 are the LBMA2U3AB1, 'B2 and 'B3, each with USB, UART and BCSP interface. They are sized 13,1 x 10,5 x 2,3 mm.
