10/100 Mbps Ethernet media converter

13 February 2002 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

Micro Linear has available the ML6652, a new 10/100 Ethernet fibre to copper media converter. This small footprint, low-power device is claimed to be the only available media converter that supports signal conversion between all 10 Mbps Ethernet copper and fibre standards and all 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet copper and fibre standards. This chip fulfils a market requirement for a single-chip device that can provide signal conversion between 100 Mbps twisted pair copper and 100 Mbps fibre in new installations and in upgrades of legacy 10 Mbps fibre infrastructures to 100 Mbps data rates.

The 100Base-SX Ethernet standard for fibre, ratified in 2001, using the same low-cost 850 nm LEDs supports a low-cost upgrade path from existing 10BASE-FL fibre installations to 100 Mbps bandwidths. The ML6652 is the only single-chip solution media converter that supports the new 100Base-SX standard. It supports 10Base-FL, 100Base-SX, and 100Base-FX Ethernet standards on the fibre side and 10Base-T and 100Base-TX Ethernet standards on the copper side.

The device is typically configured as a twisted pair interface on one side and a fibre optic interface on the other side. The twisted pair copper interface includes an integrated 10Base-T input filter and a 100Base-TX equaliser with base line wander correction circuitry. The fibre-optic interface includes an optical quantiser on the input and direct drive LED at the output to support small form factor (SFF), low-cost, miniature components for 850 nm 10Base-FL and 100Base-SX designs or 1300 nm 100Base-FX fibre implementations.
