PPTC resettable fuses

17 May 2017 Circuit & System Protection

Bourns has added a slew of new part numbers to its MF-RG product family of radial through-hole polymer positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) resettable fuses. The product family offers circuit protection solutions for applications in the automotive, data server and industrial electronics industries. The additional eight new models will now extend the maximum operating current of the MF-RG series from 3 A to 11 A.

The products are rated to a maximum operating voltage (Vrms) of 16 V and exhibit a high current carrying capability. The key feature of the MF-RG family is the reduced size of the products compared to the existing through-hole products (MF-R, MF-RX) in the Multifuse polymer PTC product portfolio. The smaller size results in a reduced thermal mass and therefore a faster circuit protection solution. A second feature is the product family’s tighter hold to trip ratio. This enables design engineers to use a device that operates much closer to the fault current of the application, thereby further enhancing the speed of response to an over-current event.
