Neutrino version 6.5 released

15 September 2010 Computer/Embedded Technology

QNX Software Systems recently announced the general availability of the Neutrino real-time operating system (RTOS) 6.5.0 and the Momentics tool suite 6.5.0. Designed for embedded system developers in the automotive, industrial, medical, networking and defence markets, these new versions introduce enhanced support for multicore processors, a persistent publish/subscribe service, an updated tool chain and a variety of performance optimisations.

The Neutrino RTOS 6.5 now supports symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) on multicore versions of ARM Cortex-A9 processors and Freescale Power e500MC processor cores. Moreover, it can now support SMP on processors with up to 32 cores, providing massive scalability for compute-intensive applications. The new persistent publish/subscribe (PPS) service simplifies the design and maintenance of complex systems that integrate many hardware devices and software components. The service also allows system components to be replaced or upgraded without requiring changes to the system’s human machine interface (HMI).

In version 6.5, the Neutrino RTOS itself offers faster kernel performance under heavy memory utilisation and significantly higher file system throughput on many platforms. It also introduces support for Intel advanced programmable interrupt controllers (APICs), Intel message signalled interrupts (MSIs), and expanded support for x86 boards from Advantech, Intel and Kontron.

The QNX Momentics tool suite offers a comprehensive Eclipse-based IDE with innovative profiling tools to help developers gain maximum insight into system behaviour. Version 6.5 of the suite introduces support for the Eclipse platform 3.5.2, Eclipse CDT 6.0 and GNU compiler (GCC) 4.4.2. The compiler offers optimised dynamic linking, including lazy linking and GNU hashing.
