Complementary 68HC08 flash micro reference designs help lower embedded development costs

10 October 2001 DSP, Micros & Memory

The first in a series of new reference designs based on cost-effective 68HC908 flash microcontrollers that are designed to enable manufacturers of embedded systems to shorten their time-to-market are now being offered by Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector. The new reference designs, downloadable from Motorola's website, provide customers with application software, device drivers, hardware schematics and documentation that help reduce development time and costs for a variety of applications.

"For home, office, industrial and automobile applications that continue to increase in functionality and sophistication, Motorola flash microcontrollers enable improved reliability and flexibility as well as lower system costs," said Paul Grimme, Vice President and General Manager of Motorola's 8 and16 bit Microcontroller Division.

PIR detection reference design

The first of the new reference designs, the passive infrared (PIR) detection system, is designed to provide specifications for the development of security peripherals and remote networks. Motorola and AT Electronic Embedded Control Consultants (ATEECC) developed the reference design, which is anticipated to demonstrate the ability of 68HC908JL/JK MCUs to form the core of an intelligent PIR detector that is capable of self-calibration and walk-through testing. For example, in the future, a building security inspector could have the ability to test, and even change, the calibration of the security systems within a building simply by using a remote control unit to update the code contained in the microcontroller's on-chip flash memory.

In addition to the PIR detection system reference design, Motorola plans to make available additional reference designs for many of today's embedded applications and networked systems, such as universal USB based sensor-actuator interface; digital addressable lighting interface (DALI); controller area network (CAN) for industrial networking; and radio frequency (RF) for gate opening.
