Industry's first LXI instruments in switching and control

12 July 2006 Test & Measurement

Concilium Technologies has revealed that Agilent Technologies has released seven new LXI Class C instruments that are the industry's first LXI-based instrumentation (as defined by the LXI Consortium) in switching and control in a 1U, half-rack instrument form factor.

The Agilent L4400 Series of switching and system control instruments are small, industry-standard instruments that can be placed wherever the application requires. The unit's remote capabilities and graphical Web interface reduce setup and troubleshooting time for engineers building design verification and functional test systems in the electronics, automotive, aerospace/defence, communications, medical and computer industries.

"With the proliferation of LAN and IP-based technologies LXI is the next logical step in data acquisition and test automation, building on the original GP-IB (now optional on the L4400 series), and the older Firewire,VXI and PXI technologies. The L4400 series of LXI instruments are cost effective tools that offers engineers a broad range of functionality to meet a wide variety of applications," says Steve Alves, MD of Concilium Technologies. "These products embody the vision many have for LXI products: small, 1U, half-rack, faceless instruments that lend themselves to distributed test systems. In addition to their simplicity, low cost and small footprint, their LXI capability will help integrators lower system setup time."

Agilent, one of the founding members of the LXI consortium and a leader in LAN-standards-based instrumentation, offers a family of LXI instruments for switching and control that include the popular 34980A switch/measure unit and the new L4400 Series switching and control. This versatile family of high-performance LXI instruments enables engineers to easily fit their application and budget to their test needs.

The L4400 provides an easy migration path from the 34980A and other existing LXI instruments without a big investment in a new platform, also as part of Agilent Open, a program that ensures industry-standards-based open connectivity in hardware and software. The Agilent L4400 Series instruments are high-performance instruments that allow engineers to buy only what they need and easily add to it when their application changes. The Ethernet interface allows simple connection to the PC or to a network for access across an engineering workgroup.

The fully featured graphical Web interface goes beyond the LXI standard and provides full control of the instrument through a standard Web browser. For example, engineers can use the Ethernet connection and the unit's graphical Web interface to remotely access and control the instrument from anywhere on the network. This enables engineers to monitor a test setup; open, close and scan switches; view commands that have gone across the bus; and troubleshoot an application via a standard Web browser.
